LOCATION:
Swahili House is situated in Tiwi on a cliff top right on the Indian ocean
14 kilometers south of Mombasa in Kenya, just three kilometers off the main
Kenya/Tanzania road.
ACCESS:
One hour from Moi International Airport in Mombasa with around 10 scheduled
services from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta Airport daily with Kenya Airways. 15
minutes from Ukunda Airstrip for private charters and almost daily
service to & from Nairobi, the Maasai Mara, Tsavo East and West and Amboseli
with Aero Kenya and other airlines.
STYLE:
Swahili House is tastefully furnished in the indigenous Swahili/Arabic
style.. Many old trees surround the area with numerous native birds and
wildlife present, including bush babies, many vervit monkeys, monitor
lizards, mongoose, (dwarf, white tailed and marsh varieties) dik dik, serval
cats and many more.
ACCOMMODATION:
The main house has four bedrooms, three en-suite. There is a built in
swimming pool off the main dining area. Atop the main house is a penthouse
known as "Naked Africa". Here there is another huge double bedroom with it's
own private bathroom and kitchen. In addition there are two cottages one
with two bedrooms and another with a loft with a double bed and two day beds
downstairs in the living room. These cottages can accommodate another 6-8
clients. These cottages can be booked seperately from the main house. The
entire complex will host up 16 in comfort.
THE FOOD:
In the cottages you can either cook for yourself or if you wish you can hire
a cook if available for US$10 a day who has been trained by Sabine in
seafood and Italian dishes. Fresh fish, crabs and prawns come almost daily
to the door. The locals also bring fresh fruit and vegetables to order. The
main house comes with a cook included in the price along with a house girl.
ACTIVITIES:
In the immediate vicinity there are many scenic walks, and a few hundred
meters along the reef at low tide are the magnificent Tiwi rock pools.

It is also a beautiful walk along the reef and beach to the Tiwi river. Here
you will find magnificent sunsets silhouetting the ancient Baobab trees near
the old Congo mosque, a building dating back centuries. The river is home to
many birds including the rare nightjar heron.
Diani, a popular European tourist destination is 12 kms away to the south.
There you will find banks, restaurants, supermarkets, boutiques, bars,
discos, casinos, car rental, hospitals, dentists and an 18-hole championship
golf course.
Deep sea fishing and any kind of safari can also be arranged from there.
A nearby hotel in Tiwi offers windsurfing, diving, squash and tennis and a
very modern gym.
The nearest game park is the Shimba Hills Reserve, just 20 min. drive from
the house. The park is famed for it's elephants, cape buffalo and the rare
sable antelope. Further a field but still only a few hours by car is the
largest game reserve in the world, Tsavo National Park.
Here you will find all the big game Africa has to offer, including
rhinoceros.
There are air links from the local Ukunda airstrip to all other major parks
in Kenya. Mainly to the famed Maasai Mara.
In addition, the marine parks of Shimoni and Kisite are less than half an
hour away by car.
Tanzania is only a one hour drive down a sealed bitumen road.
Mombasa is serviced by Moi International airport and the town itself has
just recently achieved city status. Almost anything can be bought or made in
this thriving, historically important old Swahili town.
Mombasa has a rail link to Nairobi, Uganda and soon to southern Sudan.
A cruise ship operates regularly to Zanzibar and the other Spice Isles.

HEALTH PRECAUTIONS:
The East African coast is a malarial area and prophylactics must be taken. A
doctor is on 24 hour call and a small well equipped private hospital is in
Diani. As with all destinations in Africa clear medical advice is required
from your doctor & comprehensive medical insurance is strongly advised.
